There's no such thing as an appropriate joke

8.31.2006

ernesto.

Get real. the news stations are trying so hard to get us excited about this. as if i even care. to prove it's almost a level one hurricane, CNN has pictures of people jogging in ponchos. Besides the ocean is so nice to be it. luckily I got to go in, on a nice beach in Newport, where only a few other people were. Too bad my dad was too much of a pussy to go all the way under which was way annoying.

or as if i give a shit about Jon Benet. it's like a mad parody or onion article coming alive, more care about her than valerie plame. oh man is this getting ridiculous.

Speaking of getting ridiculous, 9 Chickweed Lane has been completely ridiculous and great this week. by far it is my favorite comic! It's so clever, well written, well drawn, so feminime, and I love all the characters. especially edda

Speaking of which, did you know that XM radio is censored and has commercials. why would you pay for a music service if it has commercials? it was the most ridiculous thing. I had to listen on the fligths home because my iPod was broken, as I complained about earlier.

So let me tell you about al's breakfast. Never take anything that Doug says seriously, that's the fist rule that you have to learn when you work there. and he won't take you seriously. yet he will listen and faithfully follow every order that you yell to him. I used to think that it was overwhelming, but it really doesn't seem to be. I see how they split the orders, I have the back thing down. The back is tiny and old lookiing. there is no stainless steel, there is no microwave. just a burner, some fridges, a sink, some counters, etc. yet everything they have is so tight. Doung is a fun guy to work with, too. I like him as a boss. he understands that we don't need to work like racehorses. he lets us socialize, answer the phone, do the crossword, eat whatever we need, drink coffee all day long, etc. too bad we can't have a radio in the back, but i think that it would really interfere with the ordering process. in the long run.

people never seem to show up and they are desperate for substitutes. which has been nice for me considering that I am broke from my trip. and i have been making good tips because of it. and oh yeah, it's not that tiny back there. the dishwasher really sucks a lot, though, i have to say. i like the dinosaurs. I also like how completely non-threatening Doug is/ he is never inappropriate with his jokes or comments, yet he is. if you go to al's, I am sure you understand. I also like Jim, he's a good boss, too. he seems to like to keep to himself in the front. One thing I really like about Doug is that he will be the one to get down on his knees and fish something out from the stove, etc.

Everyone seems to have their ways, but I am slowly developing mine., Doug wants me to learn counter now. that will be intimidating. I have a hard time just shouting out when there are customers right then and there, but then again, it was my snotty and bold attitude as a customer that got me that job in the first place.

I want to go to law shool at northeastern. what do you think>

should I link to this blog on my notes in facebook? i know you people read my blog, I have the statistics to prove it. would more be interested, you think, if i put this up on facebook?

TOTH/WOTF

And here is the normal and delayed version

Tip of the Hat to

1) Al's Breakfast. working there is exactly what you think it would be like! and so lax. so laid back, not like The Wilde Roast Cafe. this one girl has not shown up twice now, which is really really annoying. good tips, too!

2) The Apple Store. So I went there to fix my iPod, keep in mind this is the one at roseville, at seven at night, just north of the state fair on snelling, and there was no line at all. I didn't even need to have my goddamned reservation. what a waste, huh. anyway, the guy was so nice and so friendly, and he was able to fix my iPod right there on the spot. something just needed to be readjusted or reattached! Same thing that happened last time, but this time they were able to fix it.

3) me, for finally doing some work on my thesis, it is actually not that hard at all! hah, look at that. I think the met got me excited about it again. I finally got to see a Van Eyck in person. man that makes wirintg about reproductions of copies of lost originals so much more exciting.

4) Andrew and Liz, for doing so much cleaning at the old place. I went over there and there was very little left that I could do. oh well. what's a girl to do? just have fun, I guess

Wag of the Finger

1) The snakes on a plane david I bought./ the quality is pretty good, nice sound, ok picture and only thrice can you see people moving in front of the camera. but it ends as soon as the credits start. i think they should have repositioned the camera, or downloaded the music video and put it on there, that would have been much nicer. and a good way to end it. speaking of which, TOTH to the kids who brought snakes to the theatre.

2) Router. it won't reset and it's a piece of crap. what a mother fucker. are we going to have to buy a new one????? huh, huh huh?

3) Erica Jong. I still love her and the new book was good, but she can't complain about being typecasted as a sex or smut author when all her books are about smut. she'll be in a publisher's office to look at his first edition waldo's and next thing you know, she's sucking his dick. but thinking about Louisa May Alcott or something. how'd that happen?

4) my boss Lisa at the st paul library. all she cares about is my work study. and she's so damn annoying. and fat

TOTH and WOTF

So I have two editions to do.
This is the vacation version

TOTH

1) My Dad! I never thought I could say that, usually we get along so poorly, but this was the first time I've evern enjoyed him. a little bit. He was spending money when he was with me, which is rare. He got it his way once and we broke into the breakers. but, you know, it was closed and I had to see it up close, and there were still people walking about out there.

2) Public Transportation. Always friendly and reliable. In Boston, Providence and Manhattan. how nice, it makes traveling so much nicer. except for this one guy who hit on me. he was on the bus because he couldn't afford gas for his 69 camaro, even though me makes 100/hr as a webpage designer. he says

3) Traveling alone as a blonde girl. People are so damn nice to you! I can't believe it! And I never felt vulnerable. then again, I was always out with at least some one/ who did i get to see on the trip you ask, not many people, Sarina and her MIT gang, my dad, Vaso, Jan, Uval and others.

4) Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island. I did not know that it was founded in 1660-something, 1663 I think, as a state based on religious freedom and toleration. how fucking cool is that? I started to read part of the state charter, actually from 1663, but quickly had to abandon doing that. I like knowing that. even though he started a church there, and probably had slaves or something. speaking of slaves, as I was walking to downtown manhattan to see city hall (mini-o for me!), I walked past a fenced off block where they are doing excavations and preparing an african-slave-burial-pit history and display. I guess they just buried slaves in downtown manhattan way back in the day.

WOTF

1) my iPod. It broke between Providence adn New York. man that sucked. the last thing I listened to was Death Cab For Cutie - The Photo Album, then it was over

2) AirTran and Logan Airport. Man, so if I had not been early to the airport, I would have been on a flight from AirTran which would have made me miss my connection. good thing I got there, too, because like three flights that were supposed to have left early where all looking for seats on that plane. And AirTran was not going to put up anyone in a hotel in Boston or Atlanta since delays due to the rain are apparentely not their faut.

3) MOMA, sure it had some cool stuff, like Starry Nights and Les Demoiselles D'Avignon (proto, not cubist for all those who keep it real like that), etc, but it was not worth the price. And it was way tooooo crowded, and too pretentious. and when i tired to have a cell talk where there was no one, a guard yelled at me. I thought the Whitney was much better, which was only one dollar when I was there. sure the stuff isn't as famous, but to me it was much more interesting. maybe that's because it had a lot of my favorite genre, minamilism. except for the whole top floor. does edward hooper need his own floor? really now. My favorite piece at the Whitney was a pink flourescent light. or the box of rocks./ It was like, hah you pretentious fuck you can't stare at me and pretend to appreciate me any more than the average viewer. At MOMA my favorite piece, well, let me think about that. I liked the david judd a lot, and some of the early matisse shit. and the miro. This is twice now I have been severely disappointed in MOMA. last time i was there this shit was being renovated and we had to go the queens one. that sucked a lot, too.

4) The Providence Police. So I was sitting in Kennedy station waiting for my friend to pick me up so we could go eat dinner. and there was a group of people that were causing trouble. or not. it's so damn hard to tell with people sometimes. anywho, they handcuffed a girl to the railing outside. they being the police that were apparentely friends with the people. make no mistake, it was not a security or transit guard, but an actual police officer. but he did not have the keys to unlock her handcuffs, and they eventually had to get a bolt cutter to free her. Many came and went, then someone came with a bolt cutter. how embarassing

five states in one day!

man the east coast is here.

I am seriuosly thinking about going to law school at Northeastern. I definetely have the gpa, and I can probably get a good lsat score as well. Boston is a lot of fun. except for I spent six hours of airport hell at Logan yesterday. I thought I was going to have to spend the night in Atlanta, where airtran WAS NOT going to pay to put up anyone in a hotel because the reason i would have missed my connection was that the first flight was delayed due to weather and weather problems they are not repsonsible for, I guess.

And i had not showered or slept the night before. and i had not eaten all day, and the only thing they had in the terminal where I was was a little pizza shop. all the pizza had cheese and they wouldn't make you a personal pizza, and all the salads had meat in them. man this was not a good trip for salad. I had the worst salad I have ever had in downtown manhattan. what a bummer. speaking of downtown manhattan, do not try to go into city hall. they won't let you. and why had i not slept the night before? well, I was hooking up with a hot Dutch boy in morning side park all night long. after being drunk wearing flip flops on fifth avenue. well no, i was wearing china flats. and don't worry, I took the metro from the village to harlem. yeah, I stayed in the heart of harlem. I was the white girl when I walked out. which is why I went out in numbers. and drank a lot of beer. beer is expensive in harlem!!! i did lots of stuff in my short time in NYC. and i did not tell a certain ex I was there, of which I am pretty proud of myself. the coolest museum that I went to was most def the whitney! man that thing was cool. I managed to get lost in central park twice, and creeped out only once. I also went to the met, moma, downtown, chinatown, noho, the village, soho, little italy, etc. actually, i take that back, walking around downtown was the coolest thing that I did. I ran into a little hip hop festival for free in the city hall park, and happened to walk past a block that was blocked off ebcause they were in the middle of doing excavations of slaves that were buried in downtown two hundred years ago that they are in progress with and will be opening a visitor center/ musuem there soon. literally across the street from the courthouse! It was a cool unexpected surprise. and the pictures of what they were excavating looked pretty damn cool as well. man manhattan has a lot of history in it. it was also cool breaking into the subway stations and drinking screwdrivers from plastic bags on the subway. and when we were at times square we saw many a mice running around. It was three in the morning, so they were out and I was reminded of A Cricket in Times Square, where there was the mouse named harrison. that was one of my favorite childhood books. speaking of which, since my fucking iPod broke, I bought a book. what book, the new erica jong of course. she is AWESOME, and if you've never read fear of flying, please do!!!!! especially if you're a girl who feels bored in a relationship. the first time I read it I was a freshman in college and felt like I was married to manney and really wanted to break up. I read the book, loved it, and broke up with manney a month later. then we got back together until september of sophomore year. in any case, read the book. the only other book that has inspried to much emotion in me is Siddhartha. and I bought the new book, seducing the demon, from a local bookstore in nolita, and it is autographed. I guess I don't really care about that,.

I'll do a TOTH/WATF east coast edition later. for now, I have some lunch to make and Mark Trail to catch up on. speaking of which, the sunday boston globe costs 2.50. what a rip off, considering it sucks. the strib is better and cheaper. haha! we're so unpretentious.

George Washington

In the past few days I have seen both the Thomas Sully AND the Gilbert Stuart portraits of Washington. and some other lame ones, one even by a woman fifty years after he died! the nerve. speaking of which, what's the deal with washington anyway? everyone is so into him? diod i miss something? I guess they're really into him everywhere. Like Washington being named after him and he wasn't even there.

on a completely unrealted note, traveling as a single female rules! people are so nice to you. I should have realized this lone ago. long ago. then again, some real creeps have hit on me in the bus.

more later. line for puter. xoxo

east coast

so here i am at my dad's place in Providence. well, it's not really in providence, it's in Cumberland, RI, about ten miles from downtown providence. I did not know this was the case at all. I am also so surprised by my dad's place. It's so very yuppy. so yuppy. it's an upper-middle class, urban sprawl converted textile-factory. It's the loft bedroom, floor-to-ceiling type of place. It's " the riverlofts at ashton mill" and it's right on the river which is nice. But of course my dad is still my dad. he has a dish washer but doesn't use it. of course he's never used it, so he doesn't know how nice it really is. he's too in my mom's mindset about dishwashers. i was too, until three weeks ago when i got one and found out how much time it really does save! he has no silverware sorter, garbage can(or bags for that matter, the garbage is a lay's bag under the sink), plates, spatulas, etc. because he doesn't want to have all that stuff if he's moving around. it's like, you don't pay rent, invest in some god damn things like a garbage can. give em' to good will or something when you move. jesus. and the huge walls are completely unadorned. it's the exposed brick, pipes, etc. typaplace.
And i rode in the golf today. man that car sucks. the back door doesn't even work anymore. how can you drive across the country like that. and it has well over 200000 miles on it now. a loud muffler, heating issue, etc. man my dad bugs me. and he says the most awkward things. and he has no faith in sam. it's like all dad cares about is sam's gpa, not his emotional well being or drug recovery, just something tangible like a gpa. already i've heard the bitching. and i don't know why my dad's so proud of me. i'm a major bitch to him all the time, too.

Boston was AWESOME I have to say. and sarina's dorm really was everything she said it was going to be. The rooms were huge, and they have all sorts of priveledges that we don't. for example they can paint any and all walls with whatever they want. and there's some cool ass things on those walls. not only are those kids really smart, but they're creative as hell. and they can smoke whenever and whatever. and they have like twenty million really cool balconies that overlook the river, etc. I was just really impressed. and those kids are fucking smart. i was so not up to par. they were doing things like puffin' while solving goemetric puzzles. or discussed the really complex plot gaps in Snakes on a Placne, saying things like I can't believe people believe the de-compresurrization combustion myth. etc. I also got to be the first one to meet Sarina's boyfriend. he was cute. older, some acne scars, but a dirty hippie guy who programs computers, goes to mit, smokes, makes fractals for burning man and plays guitar. sarina has a bf! and she was all over him at the movie.,

speaking of which, if you haven't seen the movie, please. but go with a group of drunk people and be loud and obnoxious. the crowd was so into it which made it all that much better! it's so bad., there are so many stereotypes, etc. the three different kinds of black people, an asian guy as the villian, but a good asian on the plane, the gay male stewardess (or is it), paris hilton, etc.

what else did i do there? well I went to harvard, walked around with sarina, went out for food A LOT!, did a little bit of shopping (some killer cute eight dollar tights and some goodies for my mama), went to the museum of fine arts, went walking threw downtown, went to a frat party. first one in years. it was on the boston side of the river in this really old, tall and thin house. we drank on the rooftop which overlooked the river and downtown. got drunk and watched a lot of venture brothers hungover..

all for now. loves and kisses!

8.16.2006

hell fucking yeah

i have the internet at my house again.

and that last post was mean. erik doesn't suck. he sucks at being a boyfriend. good thing he isn't mine!

he's actually a sweet and thoughtful person. he's so young and idealistic. he's big on social responsibility and consumer awareness. i used to be, too.

and his hair is fucking hot!

erik sucks

he's no good when it comes to girls. i knew this all along thanks to some warnings that made it to me through the grapevine. yet i still expected him to be better than that. as if men ever change.

he has his priorities all wrong. and he never calls you back. like ever. and if he says he'll call you later to hang out, he won't. even worse is that it will take him a whole week to call back and apologize to you for that!

however i did get an unexpected phone call from him last night. he wanted aride to the aq. i would have loved to have gone out with erik, but he refused to get in a car with hugh and harley and instead wanted me to go drive. rightly so we called him a baby the whole night.

then i was supposed to stop by after the aq, so i called twice and he went straight to voice mail. so today he calls me and is like "you didn't come over" as if i was just going to stop by at 230 in the morning without talking to him on the phone first. i wouldn't want to be dropped in upon at that hour. then he said he'd call me back in a few minutes. that was three hours ago. i'm still waiting.

it's nice to know that i won't miss him. more than i can say about gruman, the boy i dated last year. we also had a said expiration date, but he was a good boyfriend, usually, i got attached and then got hurt.

8.07.2006

and of course

my crush of the week!
oh wait, i don't have one because i've been so frustrated by one certain boy lately.

tip of the hat. or a tip of the cat

so i guess here goes for this week

tip of the hats to

1) my aunt! I was offered an internship with her. how exciting is that?

2) emily's dad and step mom. they bought us a nice-ass dinner and did a lot of work around the house

3) kate fish. for making some awesome hulahoops with my mom and i! not to mention, i never realized how much fun mom's friend barb can be, too!

4) keely's parents. for having such an awesome house with pool and nice liquor cabinet we were able to enjoy. good old maple groovy. one time in maple grove, i had to stop at both the krispy kreme and the culvers because pat freeman was driving. lame, lame, lame.

Wag of the finger to

1) Trans State. and the fringe festival. oh man, the play was really well considering that it was a bunch of amateurs with no rehearsals or money for sets, etc. but man that play sucked! not to mention the freezing cold temperature in the ugliest church I have ever been in inmy life. and the tickets were way too much! and they never offered me a student discount. do i look that old?

2) all the fucking thai places in minneapolis. seriously, they're all closed on sundays!

3) the dude at home depot. he whined to us because he had to push a ladder to help us out! as if i even care one fucking bit!

4) erberts and gerberts. man that place sucks. even subway is better than that

8.04.2006

just a little random blogging to go down here. it seems that i am not the only one suffereing from a summer blog break down. in fact everyone but the staches are.

well, summer is so close to being over and i still haven't done shit for my honors thesis. luckily i can get away with it because i did so much last fall semester. i don't know what i can do really other than read about the religious tensions of fifteenth century spain.

oh well

i moved last weekend. the same weekend which happened to be the hottest weekend of the year! and where did i move??? to a house that has air conditioning. nice, huh. we mostly drank beer the whole time and there is still a bunch of stuff that needs to get done, but we have time, right. we have like a whole year to get shit done. it is really a lot better than my old place, but i am still no satisfied completely. i'll be doing too much shit that is bad for my wallet. food, beer, etc. that emily is an expensive girl. and i am a poor girl. a very poor girl. who doesn's know when she wants to graduate.

on a random note, i went to erberts and gerberts for the first and last time today. like an idiot i forgot my lunch at home and had to ge get lunch at a restaurant. i was in stadium village and on a time crunch because i want to get the hell out of here. so falafel king was closed. lke it's no longer there. never been to milio's before. sounds lame. burger king and chipotle were out based on their fast food status and disgusting factors. so it left erberts and gerberts or breugers as my sandwich options. so i went with erberts and gerberts thinking it would maybe be cheaper adn better. i also think it is locally owned, but now that i think about it i have no real reason to believe that is true anymore. so i got a veggie sandwich. but they have like no veggies. i asked for peppers and/or cukes instead of provolone cheese. don't have em. don't have onions either. what bullshit was that! bullshit i tell you. and it was 4.23. which isn't super expensive, but the sandwich was no better than a subway, and subway would have been cheaper with lots more options for veggies and spreads. i wasn't even asked if i wanted light mayo! not even asked.

what else is new. i have a job at als'i get back to you all about that when i start.

my boss is still creepy, andre from the library.

and at the other library job i started at a new library. i don't like it as much. walter was just such a nice library. so huge and nicely decorated. and quiet. this one is packed with people, with real bosses. at least i have carpet to sit on AND cell phone reception. more than i can say about the others.

what else is new in my life

i saw the eels concert at the zoo on monday, the day the star tribune called the "hottest say in over ten years." it wasn't actually that hot, only 101, but the index was about 110,. hot, but saturday still felt better. i was wearing a short, skimpy dress and drinking a lot of beer to keep me cool. and i was fucking hot! like sweating just sitting there, and the sun was down. and the eels were such egomaniacs and into there whole "we're also cool as people" so they were wearing jump suits, pilots' caps, and black leather boots! in 101 degree weather, outside in a zoo amphitheatre! bravo to the zoo, too, for having such a nice venue!

in random news. i pet a llama last week. i saw someone wearing a let's bowl t shirt! i went to the pizza luce in uptown, finally, i went to brainerd for thirteen hours and saw a kickass lightning storm!, had a tard thrice fuck up sam and will's order at the wendy's in st cloud, had a tree fall on my roommate's car outside of our new home on the first night we spent there, i live with a cat now, bella, a total fucking slut and cutie pie!, i no longer have cable and have given up on watching project runway this season, i'm jealous of don's cool sounding canoe thing this weekend with free beer from summit, have a train in my backyard, and love living in minneapolis for the summer. god, brainerd would be so boring.
